Sniffing Out The Best Travel Destinations For Foodies

The reasons to pack up and head out on a vacation are endless. For many, it’s all about escaping the monotony of everyday life and soaking up the sun on a tropical beach. For so many others, it’s about taking in new and exciting experiences and learning about various cultures. And for a lot of other travellers, it’s all about the eats!

Are you a foodie? Do you love sampling international cuisines? If the answer is “yes”, allow us to answer the following question for you: Where are some of the best places in the world to enjoy the most delicious of meals?

Tokyo, Japan.

To a very large portion of the Canadian population, heading out for a night of Japanese cuisine is a big-time treat. Just imagine experiencing the genuine article in the “Land of the Rising Sun”. Sushi is far from the only thing you’ll find on an authentic Japanese menu. Unagi (freshwater eel), soba (buckwheat noodles), udon (hearty wheat noodles), onigiri (rice balls) and yakitori (grilled chicken skewers) are only a few of the many other delicious eats you’ll find in Japan.

According to Indagare.com, the nation’s capital, “Tokyo is one of the food capitals of the world, with an estimated 300,000 eating establishments ranging from tiny, non-descript noodle shops to fine kaiseki restaurants and wagyu beef institutions that can hold their own with the best in any of the world’s capitals.”

Copenhagen, Denmark.

Another capital city, Copenhagen, Denmark is the home of Noma. This highly-acclaimed restaurant has spent many years at the top of “The World’s 50 Best Restaurants” list. The cuisine offered by this famed eatery is a Nordic and Scandinavian mix.  The restaurant’s founders, René Redzepi and Claus Meyer have been heralded as redefining Nordic cuisine through the dishes served at Noma.

A trip to Denmark to experience this fine restaurant will have to be made quickly. According to Laura Lynch on SavoredJourneys.com, Noma will soon be closed to diners. “That’s no problem, because many chefs have come out of the Noma kitchen to build their own restaurants and so the spread of amazing restaurants in Copenhagen continues,” she assures.

Lima, Peru.

Lima is the capital city of Peru. Overlooking the Pacific Ocean, the city is home to over 9 million citizens. It is considered the nation’s political, cultural, financial and commercial centre. Known as a “beta” city for its geostrategic importance, Lima is also known for its sumptuous eats.

“As astute foodies know, Peruvian cuisine has emerged in recent years as one of the world’s most buzzed-about,” reports Indagare.com, “Ceviche, which is a national obsession, is traditionally eaten only at lunch, to be sure that the fish is fresh, and many of the best seafood restaurants are not open for dinner. Also, don’t miss trying coca tea, which is great for altitude sickness, and the national cocktail, a pisco sour.”
